Shortly after moving into our new house I inquired about whether there was curbside recycling. Much to my surprise I was told there was not. So I did the next logical thing and called the director of waste managment for our city. Even more to my surprise he told me that the contract with our waste management company would not be up for renewal until 2016 and nothing would be discussed until then. WHAT!!!!! In the mean time we would be just filling the landfill!MUCH TO MY SURPRISE, I opened the Sunday paper last week and found that our city WILL in fact begin a curbside recycling program September 1st, THIS YEAR. A point made in the paper was that school districts around the area, including mine, are educating students on recycling efforts but students can not follow through at home because recycling efforts are not implemented by the city.
Even more exciting is that we will receive a large regular "trash" can that we currently have for our RECYCLING!!! So we will have 2 LARGE cans, 1 for recycling and 1 for trash. Not only that but we don't have to sort the recycling, it just goes in the 1 bin.
One of the persons quoted in the paper recognized the fact that in a short amount of time the landfill will be full and it would be much wiser to look at the alternatives - recycling - now rather than wait until the point of no return!
I can't wait to receive our recycling bin and not have to haul so much recycling to the nearby recycling facility. BUT in the mean time that's what we will do!
