Girls Weekend Away ~ 7-16-11

Michael and his brothers met up in Hotlanta otherwise known as Atlanta, GA in May to enjoy a weekend with one another. So that prompted discussion of some friends and I to go on a trip of our own. We decided that Galveston would be our destination. We were close to home "just in case" yet far enough away the hubby's couldn't just call us to come home.

As we got closer to Galveston it started pouring rain, not a very good start to the trip. So in an effort to wait out the rain, our first stop was at

We just couldn't resist looking at the Christmas sale that they do in the summer. But, we didn't end up with much. After, we headed off for some coffee across from the pier and enjoyed catching up while we waited on the weather to clear up. Then as we went to the seawall for lunch we drove by this and had to stop.

The sculpture is the remnants of a tree that either fell over or died as the result of Hurricane Ike on September 13, 2008.

Then we were off to have lunch. We had a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico and of course we had to have seafood.

Afterwards we went to our hotel and got settled in before heading out to the strand. I was able to do a beautiful job of parallel parking down on the strand! Nice to still have the touch, not a skill one uses very often.

Then we stopped at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. They have delectable apples with all kinds of wonderful coatings. They are out of this world delicious!!!!

Then we had to make a stop by La King's Confectionery. They are famous for the taffy. The man you see in the picture has been working for La King's for over 30 years tossing out taffy as he makes it. Mmmm yummy.

Then we headed over to fisherman's Wharf for a delicious dinner overlooking the bay.

We had a relaxing evening walking along the beach and shopping in an interesting gift shop. Afterwards we retired for the evening to ready for another day of friends and fun.

Pelican and birds
The next morning we took a 3 hour tour around the town. We were able to see many more of the statues made from trees. Some of them were really cool.

We are definitely going to have to plan a trip for next summer!
